Scripture

Exodus 3:1-6 (ESV)

1 Now Moses was keeping the flock of his father-in-law, Jethro, the priest of Midian, and he led his flock to the west side of the wilderness and came to Horeb, the mountain of God. And the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush. He looked, and behold, the bush was burning, yet it was not consumed. And Moses said, “I will turn aside to see this great sight, why the bush is not burned.” When the Lord saw that he turned aside to see, God called to him out of the bush, “Moses, Moses!” And he said, “Here I am.” Then he said, “Do not come near; take your sandals off your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground.” And he said, “I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.” And Moses hid his face, for he was afraid to look at God.

Questions

  1. There is an old, often quoted proverb that says: 'The bird with the broken pinion never soars as high again'. In other words, once you mess up, that's it. Your cancelled, done, finito, never ever scaling the heights of significance and greatness. Be honest now: how much has the this lie held you back in your life? Have you fallen short somewhere and let this dictate your identity to you?

  2. Moses probably believed that lie too. Afterall, he was on the fast track to being the king of Egypt until he murdered one of its subjects. Now, 40 years on, he had faded into obscurity, tending sheep in the harsh, barren, blank landscape of the desert. Then one day, the course of his life took a dramatic turn. How does the course of events in the scripture above change your way of thinking about your life?

  3. The bible is full of men with so-called broken pinions that God called to great things. Which men in particular give you inspiration and why?

  4. Moses heard a voice coming from a flaming shrub saying, "Moses, Moses!". Moses replied, "hinaynee", meaning, "It is me". That is all God wanted to hear. God may not burn up a bush to talk to you but there will be many occasions when he is trying to get your attention. How can you make sure you hear him?
